The most telling line in 1,454 reviews of our heated hoodies is not about heat at all.
"I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he LOVES it! He wears it everyday even if he isn't using the heat. It fits well and nice material!"
Wears it every day, heat off. That is the real test for a heated sweatshirt, and it is the one that separates it from every other category of heated apparel. A heated vest lives in a drawer until it is cold. A hoodie has to earn its place as a hoodie first, and as a heated garment second.
This guide covers what that means for sizing, layering and which of our three to buy, built from those reviews and the published specifications.
What makes a good heated sweatshirt
A good heated sweatshirt works as an ordinary sweatshirt with the power off. That means fabric and cut you would wear anyway, a battery that does not create a visible lump, and heating elements you cannot feel through the lining. On top of that it needs adjustable settings, because a hoodie is worn indoors as often as out, and a runtime that covers the part of the day you are actually cold.
Sizing runs large, and there is no XS
Fit and sizing appear in 22% of our heated hoodie reviews. That is the second highest of any theme after warmth, and much higher than we see on socks at 14% or insoles at 12%.
The direction is consistent. They run roomy:
"I love this jacket. I ordered a small it's a little bit big but works great! I wish they had XS size."
Two practical consequences.
If you are between sizes, size down. The cut has to accommodate a battery and heating elements, and the pattern allows for that.
If you normally wear an extra small, we do not currently make one. The range starts at small, and a small is generous. That is a real gap and it is better to say so here than to have someone order and return.
The counterweight is layering. A heated hoodie is often worn under a coat, and the extra room is deliberate for that:
"Works great under a coat for hunting in a tree stand and for motorcycle riding."
So the roomy cut is a problem if the hoodie is your outer layer and an advantage if it is your middle one. Decide which you are buying it for before you pick a size.
Heat settings and runtime
All three of our heated sweatshirts use a 7.4V rechargeable battery and quote up to 8 hours.
That figure is measured at the lowest setting, which is how the whole category quotes it. Three adjustable settings mean the runtime you actually get depends entirely on which one you use. Runtime and battery come up in 27% of hoodie reviews, and the long-term users describe settling on low:
"Best money I've spent a long time extremely comfortable the battery last for a very long time and I can plug it into my phone if my phone starts to die."
That last detail is real and worth knowing: the battery pack has a USB output, so it will charge a phone. Several reviewers mention it, and nobody buys a heated hoodie for that reason, but on a cold day outdoors it turns out to matter.
The product pages state the 2024-style sweatshirts warm up to 130°+F. Treat that as the ceiling on the highest setting rather than an operating temperature, in the same way that the 8 hour figure is a floor-setting number.
What people actually use them for
Across 1,454 heated hoodie reviews averaging 4.98:
| Theme | Share of hoodie reviews |
| Warmth | 53% |
| Work and job sites | 30% |
| Runtime and battery | 27% |
| Bought as a gift | 23% |
| Fit and sizing | 22% |
| Comfort | 20% |
| Hunting and skiing | 8% |
Work at 30% is the largest use case after warmth itself, and it is specific: cold indoor workplaces as much as outdoor ones.
"Love it mostly because I work in a very cold wearhouse this is perfect."
"My son works in construction, out side all day long, he's comfortable and warm, so I am happy."
A cold warehouse is a use case a coat does not serve well, because you are moving, going in and out, and a coat is too much. That is the gap a heated hoodie fills better than any other garment we make.
Gifting at 23% is the other cluster, concentrated at Christmas, and it interacts with the sizing point above. If you are buying for someone else and cannot check the fit, the roomy cut works in your favour.
When a heated sweatshirt is the wrong answer
You need an outer layer in wet weather. A sweatshirt is not a shell. If it rains or snows on you, you want a heated jacket, with the hoodie underneath it if it is truly cold.
You want maximum warmth for standing still. For sustained cold with no movement, a heated vest or jacket with more coverage and a larger battery does more. The hoodie is the versatile choice, not the warmest one.
You wear an XS. Covered above. The range starts at small and runs generous.

The three publish near-identical specifications. On the figures alone the unisex zip hoodie at $149.95 does what the other two do for $40 less, and if you are choosing on specification that is the one to buy.
Every heated sweatshirt in this category quotes roughly 8 hours on a 7.4V battery with three settings. That row is identical across brands as well as across ours, because the battery format is standard.
The products
Unisex Heated Zip Hoodie Sweatshirt, $149.95. Three settings, 7.4V battery included, up to 8 hours quoted, 2024 style. The best value of the three on published specification.
Women's Heated Sweatshirt, $189.95. Same core specification in a women's cut.
Heated Zip Hoodie Sweatshirt for Men and Women, $189.95. Three adjustable settings, 7.4V battery, described as soft and lightweight.
If you need an outer layer rather than a mid layer, look at heated apparel for the jacket and vest range.
Frequently asked questions
Do heated hoodies really work? Yes. Warmth is mentioned in 53% of our 1,454 hoodie reviews, which average 4.98. The heating elements warm the core rather than the extremities, which is why they work well under a coat.
Are heated hoodies a thing? They are a small category compared with heated jackets and vests, which is partly why several reviewers mention nobody they know has seen one. The format exists because a hoodie is worn in situations a coat is not.
What is the warmest hoodie for winter? An unheated hoodie can only slow heat loss. A heated one adds heat, so in genuinely cold conditions it is a different mechanism rather than a warmer version of the same thing. For the coldest conditions, layer a heated hoodie under a shell.
How long does the battery last on a heated sweatshirt? Up to 8 hours, quoted at the lowest of three settings, on the 7.4V battery included with all three of ours. Expect less on the highest setting.
What size heated hoodie should I order? Size down if you are between sizes, because the cut is generous to accommodate the battery and elements. Size up only if you intend to layer it over a thick mid layer. We do not currently offer an extra small.
Can you wash a heated sweatshirt? Remove the battery first, always. The care approach is the same as for our other heated garments, and our guide on washing heated socks covers the two mistakes that ruin heated fabric generally.
Where to start
First, decide mid layer or outer layer. Under a coat, the roomy cut is an advantage and you should buy your usual size. As your outside layer, size down.
Second, compare the three on price. They publish near-identical specifications, so unless you specifically want the women's cut, the unisex zip hoodie at $149.95 is the straightforward choice.
